Sail Scotland's 2018 Photo Competition

Date published: 23 April 2018

Top sailing photographer Marc Turner is back with our biggest photography competition yet, looking at Scotland’s Legendary Sailing!

In 2017, Marc asked you to show him what makes Scotland’s Legendary Sailing, and boy did you deliver… so to celebrate we have doubled the prize fund for 2018!

In fact, the response was so big this year that Marc had to split the entries into three categories for the first time: Landscape & Light, On the Water, and Wildlife.

He said: “The entries this year have been truly breathtaking across all categories, and choosing our finalists was harder than ever. All of our fifteen finalists were wonderful, and each of our three eventual winners all have something really special about them.”

Our 2018 Photographer of the Year, Mike Beard, certainly captured something special in his Puffin shot. Marc said: “Mike Beard’s winning entry is such a fun image of the iconic bird coming into land with its catch. The blur on the wings and the splayed feet makes it look so unstable adding to the comedy. A worthy winner overall winner of the public vote.”

“Mairi Fleck’s shot of Tobermory is a lovely technical image which has to be seen big to fully appreciate the subtle detail, evoking the feeling of coming into some of the welcoming harbours at dusk. And Linzi Higgins’ shot of Rattray Head shows great simple composition and a lovely mix of light and texture that is often difficult to capture.”

“This year has really raised the bar and in 2018 I want to see even more - more light, more wildlife, more people and places that makes Scotland’s legendary sailing… get snapping and show me something special.”

Submit your entries for our 2018 photo competition online at: www.sailscotland.co.uk/gallery

We will choose the best shots entered between October 2017 and September 2018, and let the public decide the winner by voting for their favourite. The winning entry in each category will receive £50 to spend, and the shot with the most public votes will receive £100!
